Cova d'en Xoroi is a spectacular cave carved into the rock of a beautiful cliff on the south coast of the island of Menorca. The cave has several terraces and viewpoints, at different heights, where visitors can enjoy one of the best sunsets in the world.
Legend has it that Xoroi was a man with an unknown past who came from the sea, though no one knew how. He is said to have survived a shipwreck and used the cave as a refuge. Meanwhile, nearby houses were often looted and a young woman is said to have disappeared mysteriously just before her wedding.
Years passed, and one winter's day, after heavy snowfall, footprints on the ground led to the cave. There they found a man, a woman and three children. Xoroi then threw himself into the sea, followed by his eldest son, taking the mystery of his life with him. His wife and two other children were taken to Alaior, where they spent the rest of their lives.
Expect to pay around €10 per adult to enter the cave (with a drink included), and €6 for children aged 2 to 11. Open from July to November, Cova d'en Xoroi also has a nightclub. To find out more, click here.
