Every year, for a week in mid-August, one of the most traditional, lively and famous festivals in Barcelona takes place.
It is known as the Festa Major de Gràcia, one of the most colourful festive events of the year.
The Gràcia district was an independent municipality until it became part of Barcelona in 1897. Since then it has kept its strong community spirit, which shows in the way residents take part in its annual Festa Major.
Did you know that the Gràcia festival has existed for more than 200 years? The 2021 edition was the 204th Festa Major de Gràcia in Barcelona!
Every August in Barcelona, the beautiful Gràcia district hosts a street festival that lasts a whole week. During this festive week, local residents take great pleasure in decorating the streets.
The first celebration took place in 1817. In 2021, the festival ran from 15 to 21 August in Gràcia, Barcelona.
This huge event is based on a competition between the streets of the district, in which the decorations and the creativity are compared.
The competition is a real feast for the eyes, with lights, sculptures and a variety of themes chosen by a committee of each street's residents.
Walking through the streets, you may find yourself on a trip to Japan, in a mad scientist's laboratory or even in an underwater world.
Every street takes part, and the decorations become more dazzling from one street to the next.
Many people think this very colourful festival is the best festival in Barcelona, and we will not argue! The festival has even become an important tradition in Barcelona: it is the most popular and colourful festival in the city.
The people of Gràcia welcome visitors and tourists to their neighbourhood with open arms, which is one of the reasons why the Festa Major de Gràcia is so special. If you would like to buy a property in Barcelona, contact us.
