Poblenou is a neighbourhood of Barcelona in the Sant Martí district. Its most popular main street is the Rambla del Poblenou, formerly known as the "Paseo del Triunfo", whose historic route runs between the sea and the mountains.
This remarkable Barcelona neighbourhood, along with the district it belongs to, has been transformed in recent years. The old industrial area has become one of the trendiest places in Barcelona. Its village feel has given way to start-ups, lofts and modern offices.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the area became known as the "Manchester of Catalonia" because of its high concentration of factories and industries. In fact, at the time, Poblenou had the highest industrial density in Catalonia.
Over time, the factories gradually moved to the outskirts of the city and the neighbourhood went through a period of neglect. It took the development of projects such as the Olympic Village and the 22@ district for investment to return to the neighbourhood. Today, modern office blocks and hotels sit alongside traditional residential areas and old industrial buildings that have been restored. It is a neighbourhood with a busy cultural, social and leisure life, and plenty of places to live.
Poblenou is one of those places in Barcelona that deserve to be explored slowly. Impressive 19th-century brick chimneys still bear witness to one of the largest concentrations of industry in southern Europe, as do century-old factories which, in some cases, have been restored and converted into facilities, museums and universities.
The most iconic spot is the Rambla del Poblenou. This lively promenade, full of bars, cafés and restaurants, is the only boulevard in Barcelona that leads to the beach.
On Plaça de les Glòries, you will find the Barcelona Design Museum (Disseny Hub). Its forecourt is one of the best places to photograph the nearby Torre Agbar, one of the symbols of Barcelona, designed by the famous Jean Nouvel.
Also designed by Nouvel, the Parc del Centre del Poblenou is one of the largest parks in the neighbourhood, but not the only one. Parc del Poblenou is another large public park, next to the beach and ideal for leisure. Nearby is another of the neighbourhood's symbols, the Poblenou cemetery, which holds a rich artistic heritage.
The neighbourhood is linked to the international airport and the rest of the city by Poblenou metro station. The area bordered by Diagonal gives access to the Trambesòs tram network via the Pere IV and Fluvià stops.
There are also 7 stations of the Bicing bike-sharing system. Metro line 1, at Marina and Glòries, serves the west of the neighbourhood. To the east, El Maresme-Fòrum will take you close to the Parc del Fòrum and the Diagonal Mar shopping centre. Finally, the line 4 stations, Poblenou, Llacuna and Bogatell, take you to the heart of the neighbourhood. Several tram lines also run through the area.
