Have you just bought a second home in Spain? Do you dream of watching Pedro Almodóvar's films or the latest season of the hit series Money Heist (La casa de papel) on Netflix without subtitles? Are you wondering whether to say “soy contento” or “estoy contento”, and is the famous double L giving you a hard time? Don't panic! Alveo Search has the recipe to put an end to these questions, learn Spanish easily and launch into endless conversations in the language of Cervantes.

This is our first tip, and it is as easy to put into practice as it is effective. Hearing the Spanish soundtrack while reading the translation in English should help you make real progress in a short time. And what a pleasure to discover the real voices of Spanish-speaking actors, usually far better than the dubbed versions! Then watch the same film with Spanish subtitles, and finally with no subtitles. This method works wonders!
Take a famous Spanish-language chorus, such as the Gipsy Kings' “Bamboleo”. The day you can sing it by heart, you will already have taken a big step! And there are plenty more like it…
This technique is often overlooked, but there is nothing silly about it! On the contrary, it will help you pick up everyday vocabulary. The important thing is to change books regularly to widen your vocabulary, but also to reread a book you have already read from time to time. This helps the words stick in your memory. There is no secret to learning a language: repetition is the key to success.
Type “learn Spanish online” into Google and you will get a dizzying number of results…
An online course lets you learn wherever you are. To help you choose, here are the ingredients that make a method work, and that are worth looking for in any online course: a weekly lesson with a PDF sheet, exercises corrected automatically or by a teacher, and virtual classes or discussions on Zoom to practise speaking. Finally, look for a virtual library that gives you access to a wide range of lessons online. So find the course that suits you and ¡vamos!

If you use social media, follow Spanish public figures, influencers or media. When you check Instagram, Facebook or TikTok, their posts will show up automatically and you will get their news without even asking. It is an ideal way to make Spanish part of your daily life. Without realising it, you will start picking up new words.
For the bravest among you, the good old method of learning vocabulary lists by heart has proved its worth. It is a little boring, admittedly, but very effective. The same goes for expressions: nothing beats repeating them again and again. On the bright side, Spanish expressions are often very colourful! Here is a good example: “A caballo regalado, no se le mira el diente”, the Spanish version of “don't look a gift horse in the mouth”: if someone gives you a present, accept it gratefully… even if you don't like it!
If you have the chance to travel, take it! There is nothing like immersing yourself in a culture and a language to learn more. With all these tips and a little perseverance, we are sure you will be getting by in Spanish in no time. ¡Es hora de jugar!
