There are many reasons why you might choose to live in Almería. Being born in Almería is already a luxury. But there are also many adopted Almerians who love the city.
Almería, in the far south-east of the Iberian Peninsula, was founded in 955 AD by Abd al-Rahman III on the old Iberian and Roman settlement, and became the most important port of Umayyad al-Andalus. Today it is a modern city of nearly 200,000 inhabitants, with a growing role in areas such as the economy, culture and sport.

With mild temperatures all year round, Almería is the only city in continental Europe never to have recorded frost. With an average annual temperature of 20 °C and 3,000 hours of sunshine, it is a paradise to live in all year round. Rain is very rare: no more than 20 days a year, and in very small amounts.

Another key reason to live in Almería is the kindness of the wonderful people who live there. Almerians are open, positive and happy to share the best of their land with visitors and neighbours.

Of the province's 217 km of coastline, 35 km belong to the Bay of Almería, a beautiful stretch of coast where you can enjoy the sea and water sports all year round. Beaches range from town beaches such as Zapillo or Nueva Almería to the idyllic beaches of the Cabo de Gata natural park, such as Los Genoveses beach.
Another great reason to live in Almería is its rich and varied food. Its high-quality farm produce, such as the Raf tomato, is known worldwide, and the sea provides fresh produce such as monkfish, tuna, octopus or prawns. Tapas are a local tradition.

All this gives the people of Almería a much better quality of life than in other Spanish cities. Almería offers schools, hospitals, universities, a wide cultural scene and a rich artistic heritage, such as the Alcazaba and the fortress cathedral.
