Blanes marks the start of the Costa Brava: the rock of Sa Palomera, jutting into the sea in the middle of the seafront, is its symbolic gateway. On the hillside, the Marimurtra botanical garden, created in 1921, overlooks the sea between two coves.

Every July, the town hosts the Costa Brava International Fireworks Competition, with the fireworks set off from Sa Palomera. The coastal railway links it to Barcelona.
